Job Description
This position is located in the Endemic Poultry Viral Disease Research Unit with the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Athens, GA. The mission of the Laboratory is to provide leadership in solving current and future problems in enteric viruses, neoplastic and other viral diseases of poultry using basic and applied multidisciplinary team approaches thereby benefiting the poultry industry and consumers.
Job Requirements
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Additional Requirements In addition to meeting the basic requirements described in the education section of this announcement, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below. 0701 Series: May qualify on experience, or education, residency/post graduate work or for GS 13, board certifications. Please read carefully. At the GS-12 0401 and 0701 series:

Specialized Experience: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-12 level of this position are: Experience in the design and execution of experiments involving the manipulation of genomes of animal viruses; - Experience in managing large data sets [e.g., microarray, proteomics or next generation sequencing], performing data mining, and pathway analysis; Experience conducting research in the area of virology, metagenomics and molecular biology as evidenced by reported research in the form of manuscripts and peer-reviewed publications.

OR

Education: For 0401 series, Ph.D in directly related field. For 0701 series only: Master's degree or relevant graduate study or a dual DVM/graduate degree as described below at an accredited college or school, in addition to completing the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or an equivalent degree. Education Substitution For the 0701 Series: Master's degree in an area of specialization, including but not limited to, animal science, avian medicine, food safety, infectious disease, veterinary clinical sciences, pathobiology, biomedical sciences, veterinary anatomy, veterinary preventive medicine, comparative biological sciences, epidemiology, veterinary parasitology, molecular veterinary biosciences, public health, microbiology, pathology, immunology, laboratory animal medicine, toxicology, wildlife, zoological animal medicine, or sciences related to the work of a veterinary medical officer position. 0701 series: Residency/Post-Graduate Training Programs: Successful completion of two years of an internship, residency program, or fellowship training program in a discipline related to the position.

At the GS-13 both 0401 and 0701 series:

Specialized Experience: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-13 level of this position are: Experience as a principal investigator to establish a research program focused on infectious clone systems for animal viruses; Develop principles, models and approaches for the discovery, new insights and the elucidation of the mechanisms of how viruses impact pathophysiology or immunological features in in vitro and/or in vivo animal model systems.

For 0701 series only:

To qualify at the GS-13 grade level on the basis of education only, applicants must successfully a Ph.D. in relevant graduate study or a dual DVM/graduate degree as described below at an accredited college or school, in addition to completing the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or an equivalent degree.

Education Substitution: Ph.D degree in an area of specialization, including but not limited to, animal science, avian medicine, food safety, infectious diseases, veterinary clinical sciences, pathobiology, biomedical sciences, veterinary anatomy, veterinary preventive medicine, comparative biological sciences, epidemiology, veterinary parasitology, molecular veterinary biosciences, public health, microbiology, pathology, immunology, laboratory animal medicine, toxicology, wildlife, zoological animal medicine, or sciences related to the work of a veterinary medical officer position.

OR

Residency/Post-Graduate Training Programs: Successful completion of three years of an internship, residency program, or fellowship training program in a discipline related to the position.

OR

Board Certification

Specialty boards that are recognized by the American Board of Veterinary Specialties (ABVS) of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) certify eligible candidates as specialists in specific veterinary medical fields. Veterinarians who successfully complete all requirements for Diplomate status in an ABVS-recognized veterinary specialty organization may qualify for the GS-13 grade level.

OR

GS-14: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal Service/ Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-14 level of this position are: Providing leadership and guidance on research projects; - Producing publications as the primary author for those that impact the advancement of the field of virology, immunology, pathology, experimental design, and biosafety practices or are viewed as authoritative; - Conceiving and formulating research ideas and methodologies that advance the field of science on virology, immunology, pathology, experimental design, and biosafety practices, or are an important reference by other scientists; -Experience participating in Symposia that define the state of the discipline or introduce in areas in the field of poultry Disease; -Experience well communicating with stakeholder organizations and translating industry needs into researchable activities; -Experience efficiently managing and balancing research programs; including personnel, equipment, and fiscal resources.

OR

GS-15: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 grade level in the Federal Service/ Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-15 level of this position are:managing one or more research programs, including personnel, equipment and fiscal resources. -Leading multidisciplinary teams to develop research project plans and/or written research proposals; plan research procedures and techniques and design experiments and data collection with other team member including from other agencies, organizations or commercial partners; -presenting scientific information in both verbal and written modes on enteric or immunosuppressive diseases of poultry to officials in government, industry and universities, customers, partners, stakeholders, support personnel, and participate in organizing national and international professional conferences. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
